Dog Parent’s Responsibilities

I want to say something about being a responsible dog parent, because this morning was very upsetting to me and my little guy, Howie.

He is around 11 lbs, closer to 12 if he’s soaking wet. A little shitzu-poodle mix, a tired old guy who is almost 10 years old, who only wants a nice walk to sniff everything he sees and a warm lap for napping. Food twice a day with a nice liver or blueberry treat finishes off his wish list, but all in all, a simple guy.

This morning we walked our usual morning route, diversifying during the day so he gets as many different smells as possible, and were almost to the back door when we came upon a neighbor and his unleashed dog. Now, mind you, Howie is always on a leash. The other dog was lying on the ground near his owner, so I figured everything was cool. When Howie and I turned to walk away, the other dog came running at Howie growling, then the next thing I knew my poor old guy was yelping in pain.

I picked him up and yelled at the other dog, who is much bigger and younger, and the owner said to me, “She’s only playing.”

Huh? She lunged at my dog, made him yelp in pain, and you have the nerve to say that? Really?! I carried my boy inside and checked him over. There were no bite marks I could find, but his left front paw and leg was wet, so I’m thinking she tried to grab him, causing him to yelp.

The issue is that we are supposed to have a leash law in this town and specifically in our building. My dog was on his leash standing right by my leg, minding his own business. The other dog has come around him before but always laid down as if she was ‘herding’ him, never approaching him that close. What happened this morning should never have happened, and would never have happened if the owner had a leash on his dog.

We were lucky this time. Aside from our pounding hearts from fear, the only residual effect is that he is more clingy today than usual. It could have been a total horror show if she’d attacked my little guy.

So my message today is this: while you would love to let your dog run free, unless you own your own private yard or go to a dog park, don’t. Just don’t. Other people and dogs have the same right to be out in the fresh air enjoying a walk as you do. Follow the rules and everyone will have a safe environment to do so.

Oh yeah, and bring your poop bag on your walk, too. It is disgusting how many people take no responsibility for their pet’s waste, leaving it in yards or public spaces. Okay, end of rant.

Howie and I wish you all a very pleasant and relaxing Sunday afternoon and evening! It’s almost time for our afternoon walk and my little guy is ready to go exploring.
