This Old Person’s Solution to Hearing the TV

Having spent the past 20 years or so struggling to hear the conversations on my television shows, I am now blissfully able to hear everything they say! No more turning on the captions, those don’t work when I’m trying to crochet while watching TV. I end up missing everything! I no longer have to rewind (sometimes multiple times!) when there was too much background noise on the show or in my apartment. Living near the main road can be quite a challenge to someone my age who is hard of hearing but not yet ready for hearing aids. Especially in the warm weather when my windows are open, or the AC is running.

For a long while I researched Bluetooth speakers or earphones to use with my Smart TV but discovered it didn’t come equipped. When I researched other options, I found that I can in fact use the Bluetooth options from my Firestick and/or Roku. Last summer I bought a new Roku TV that came pre-loaded, but I preferred my Firestick interface, so I programmed the settings to launch Firestick as my main interface.

Then, I bought a pair of wireless Onn Sport Bluetooth earphones and paired them to my TV. First, I charged them until the blinking red light turned solid blue, then I set them into pairing mode by pressing the On button until the light blinked. Then I turned on the TV and went into my settings and found the sound/audio option, selected Bluetooth, then chose New Device. I was listening through the earphones!

Every time I want to hear a show better or listen to the TV while I’m working in the kitchen, I put in my earphones and press and hold the On button until it pairs to the TV. I no longer miss what they’re saying or have to turn the volume up until the TV shakes. No, ma’am. I also found out you can pair your earphones to your cell phone and any other TV in the house and they will work with whatever is turned on. I am in heaven!

If you get confused trying to get your own earphones set up, go to Google and search for your particular ones, and your TV, as well. There are all kinds of videos and directions online for your specific setup. At 72, I find myself learning new things every day!! Hope this helps you, my friends!

  1. Hi Susan!

I use Bluetooth for my cell and Kindle because I’m usually up early and don’t want to wake Mike.

I’m glad it worked for you!!

  2. Hi Heather, thanks for reading and commenting! I, too, use Bluetooth for other electronics. The reason I was so excited about making the connection from Firestick is that for months I have been told my TV didn’t have Bluetooth capabilities, so I was out of luck. Finding and using the Firestick settings made a huge difference for me!

Enjoy the rest of your winter in sunny Florida!
